Precious Plankton: A Celebration for World Ocean Day

Hundreds of schoolchildren from across North Lincolnshire have come together to create Precious Plankton — a vibrant and imaginative display celebrating World Ocean Day.

Plankton may be tiny, but they play a huge role in our planet’s health. These microscopic organisms form the foundation of marine and freshwater ecosystems, supporting the food chain and contributing to vital global processes like carbon cycling.

Inspired by the beauty and importance of plankton, pupils have crafted colourful artworks that will be showcased in the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre café and windows from Saturday 7 June to Saturday 28 June. The display is a joyful tribute to the ocean and a reminder of the wonders hidden beneath the waves.

World Ocean Day, celebrated annually on June 8, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of our oceans and the urgent need to protect them. Officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008, it brings communities together to honour the ocean and inspire action for a sustainable future.
