Introducing: Richard Barnard
Introducing: Richard Barnard is part of an ongoing series is a short solo-exhibitions, showcasing the work of artists working in Scunthorpe and the wider region – often offering the artist their first opportunity to exhibit in an established public gallery.
For our first Introducing exhibition of 2026 we’re delighted to present an exhibition by Scotter based painter Richard Barnard.
Richard travelled widely as a child due to his father’s work in the Diplomatic Services, spending much of his early childhood in rural Kenya. However, his most cherished childhood memories were of visiting his grandparents in the heart of industrial Lancashire – a place where he felt grounded and at ‘home’ (he eventually returned to the North West to study at Lancaster College of Art). His large-scale paintings represent a yearning for this time, depicting nostalgic scenes of life in the 1950s and 60s terrace houses, under the smog of mills and factories.
We always like to learn more about artists working in the local area. If you are an artist and would like to show or tell us about your work, please enquire at gallery reception or email 20-21.epd@northlincs.gov.uk
